This film is divided into two parts, telling the story of Hu Yuyin (Liu Xiaoqing), a beautiful woman known as "Sister Furong" in Furong Town, located at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and her experience during the "Four Cleanups Movement" and the "Cultural Revolution". In 1963, with their warm and thoughtful service, the rice tofu stall run by Hu Yuyin and her husband Guigui (Liu Linian) gradually became the most lively scene in the morning market. In addition, the couple lived frugally and accumulated a considerable amount of wealth. Li Mangeng (Zhang Guangbei), the town party secretary and Hu Yuyin's brother, Gu Yanshan (Zheng Zaishi), the director of the grain station, and the neighbors were all happy for them. When they built a new house and prepared to move up to a better life, they encountered the "Four Cleanups Movement". Li Guoxiang (Xu Songzi), the former manager of a state-owned restaurant and now the section chief of the county's commercial bureau, who had always been jealous of Hu Yuyin, joined forces with Wang Qiushe (Zhu Shibin), a second-rate man, and took the opportunity to classify her as a "rich peasant woman" among the "five types of counter-revolutionary elements" and sent her to clean the streets with Qin Shutian (Jiang Wen), the former director of the county cultural center and now a "rightist" known as "Qin Dianzi". Guigui died. During the movement, Li Mangeng betrayed Hu Yuyin against his conscience, while Gu Yanshan had always been an honest man by the standards of an old revolutionary soldier. In 1966, the "Cultural Revolution" began, and the absurdity of the world could be seen from Li Guoxiang and Wang Qiushe, who kept switching roles. When sweeping the streets together, Hu Yuyin blamed Qin Shutian for her miserable experience, because the latter had sung a song of congratulations to her and Guigui when they got married, which was later considered counter-revolutionary, and wrote a couplet of congratulations to her when her new house was built, which was later considered counter-revolutionary. Qin Shutian did not make much excuses for Hu Yuyin's resentment, but often helped her secretly. Gradually, the two developed feelings and planned to live a good life as a family, but the road ahead was full of blood and rain. And when they were in the most difficult time, Gu Yanshan never forgot to lend a hand.
