Max (Robert DeNiro) was prosecuted for rape, and he found a lawyer, Sam (Nick Nolte), to defend him; what he didn't know was that Sam was a feminist. Out of indignation, Sam deliberately concealed a piece of evidence that was favorable to Max in his defense, which eventually led to Max being sentenced to 6 more years.
