The play is adapted from the deeds of Zhang Guimei, the winner of the "July 1st Medal". Zhang Guimei (played by Song Jia) is an ordinary middle school teacher in the mountainous area of western China. Over the years, she has witnessed her female students dropping out of school due to family poverty. At the age of 15 or 16, they either get married and have children, or go out to work, which makes Zhang Guimei extremely sad and regretful. She is determined to run a completely free girls' high school so that these girls in the mountains can get the opportunity to receive education, be able to enter university, and get out of the mountains, completely changing their fate. In 2008, the only completely free girls' high school in China was established.
