Starr (Amandla Stenberg) is a 16-year-old black girl who attends a white private school. Every day, she has to constantly switch her identity between school and home, and the troubles caused by her skin color make her feel very troubled. One day, Starr attended a party hosted by a friend, at which she reunited with her childhood playmate Hallely (Algee Smith). The old friends met very cordially, and Hallely drove Starr home, but he didn't know that he was stopped by the police halfway. What Starr didn't expect was that the police shot and killed Hallely because of a small misunderstanding, and he was the only eyewitness. At the subsequent hearing, Hallely was described as a drug dealer, but Starr knew that all this was a lie.
