The play tells a love story that spans half a lifetime in old Shanghai in the 1930s. Gu Manzhen came to a factory as a clerk. Her colleague Shen Shijun was gentle and honest. Manzhen and him admired each other and gradually fell in love amid misunderstandings and mutual assistance. Her elder sister Manlu became a dancer for the family's livelihood, but her beauty was fading and her charm was gone. The family struggled to survive in the quagmire of material desire. The Shen family hoped that Shen Shijun could marry Shi Cuizhi, the eldest daughter of the Shi family, but Cuizhi fell in love with Shijun's friend Xu Shuhui by mistake. Manlu married the shrewd Zhu Hongcai, and in order to keep her husband's heart, she did not hesitate to use her own sister to bear a child. The prosperous and magnificent old Shanghai became secretive and even sinister. Many years later, Manzhen and Shijun meet again. Their fate is so unexpected. Manlu entrusts her child to Zhu Hongcai before her death. Manzhen decides to marry Zhu Hongcai for the sake of her child, and Shijun and Cuizhi support each other.
