The story takes place in the United States in 1965. A 10-year-old girl named Charlie (Brittany Robertson) lives with her seriously ill mother. One day, a man named Church (Eddie Murphy) knocked on the door of Charlie's house. He came here to take care of the poor mother and daughter. His term of office was very short, only 6 months. However, Mr. Church stayed at Charlie's house for six years. Under his guidance, Charlie, who had no goals, began to want to become a writer. After her mother died, Charlie gradually lost contact with Mr. Church and embarked on her own life path. In the second year of college, Charlie found that she was pregnant.
