At the beginning of the 20th century, Bill (Richard Gere) was a factory worker. Because of a fight, he had to leave the factory. He left Chicago with his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) and sister Linda, and found a job harvesting wheat in a wheat field in Texas. Bill and Abby pretended to be brothers and sisters. A young farmer (Sam Shepard), who was also the owner of the farm, was attracted to Abby. At the same time, he found that he had a terminal illness.
