"When the bullets burst, there were twenty-three of them, twenty-three people who had given their hearts before, twenty-three foreigners who were our brothers..." In 1955, the French poet Aragon wrote such a poem for a group of immigrants who dedicated themselves to France. Back in 1943, during the German occupation of Paris, under the leadership of the Armenian poet Missak Manouchian, a group of young Jews, Hungarians, Poles, Romanians, Spaniards, Italians, and Armenians formed an underground resistance organization, determined to fight for the liberation of the France they loved. They risked their lives and carried out many assassinations against the Nazis and their puppets. Soon, they became a thorn in the eyes of the Nazis, and the police grasped and suppressed their actions through tracking, reporting, threats, and torture. On February 21, 1944, 22 men and one woman, including Manouchian, were sentenced to death. The 23 were called "evil troops" by the Nazis, and their images later appeared on red leaflets in the streets of the country. These foreign immigrants who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of France eventually became legendary heroes of this country.
