According to ancient records, in the year when Emperor Xuanzong of Tang ascended the throne, Zhong Kui went to Chang'an to take the exam. He was praised as a "genius" by the examiner and was selected as the first among the tribute scholars. However, during the palace examination, the treacherous minister Lu Qi judged people by their appearance and made slanderous remarks, which caused him to fail to be selected as the first place. In anger, Zhong Kui hit his head against the palace pillar and died, shocking the court and the public. Emperor Xuanzong issued an edict to confer Zhong Kui the title of "Great God of Exorcism" and traveled all over the world to "kill demons and exorcise evil spirits." The Jade Emperor was grateful that Zhong Kui was willing to sacrifice his life for justice, so he conferred the title of God and ordered Zhong Kui to take charge of the injustices in the mortal world and eliminate demons for the world. So Zhong Kui led his sworn brothers Liu Hanyan and Wang Fuqu to start their thrilling and moving journey of upholding justice. "Tianshi Zhong Kui" mainly tells the legendary story of "Tianshi" Zhong Kui and his sworn brothers Liu Hanyan and Wang Fuqu, who exorcised demons, punished evil and promoted good, and upheld justice in the world. It is divided into six units, namely "The Crime of Beauty", "The Sword of Wisdom", "The Tears of the Green Snake", "The Bloody Mandarin Ducks", "The Mermaid's Crazy Love" and "Zhong Kui Marries His Sister".
