Introduction

In the third year of Xuantong, Lai Xi, a poor child from a remote mountain village, saw the eunuch Xiao Dezhang in his village "returning home in glory" and was envious. Although his mother (played by Gui Yalei) couldn't bear it, she was persuaded by her father (played by Lin Zhengying) to cleanse her son and send him to the palace so that the whole family could have enough food and clothing. After adulthood, Lai Xi (played by Mo Shaocong) did not have enough food and clothing as expected. Soon the Republic of China overthrew the Qing Dynasty, and the eunuchs in the palace could not stay. Lai Xi came to the opera troupe to learn from the troupe owner (played by Sammo Hung) and reunited with his childhood friend Zhao Di (played by Irene Wan). Zhao Di mistakenly thought he was a revolutionary and wanted to marry him. After knowing Lai Xi's identity as a eunuch, Zhao Di left in loneliness. In order to escape the pursuit of warlords, Lai Xi re-entered the Forbidden City and was taken care of by Eunuch Ding (played by Wu Ma). After a series of political struggles, Lai Xi and Eunuch Ding were expelled from the palace again. At this time, the pregnant Zhao Di appeared in front of Lai Xi again. Many years have passed, and when Lai Xi thought she could have happiness, Zhao Di's revolutionary husband (played by Andy Lau) reappeared. At this time, Eunuch Ding, with his last loyalty to the emperor, tried to make Lai Xi and himself go to the Japanese consulate to take care of Pu Yi. What should Lai Xi do? This film is adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel by eunuch Sun Yaoting. It is the debut of Zhang Zhiliang from producer to director, and also the representative work of Mo Shaocong nominated for the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor.
