Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) was a famous crime writer more than a decade ago. In order to find inspiration for his creation, he moved into a murder house where murders had occurred again and again. Today, in order to reproduce the glory of the past, he once again moved into a murder house with his wife Tracy (Juliet Rylance) and a pair of children Trevor (Michael Hall D'Addario) and Ashley (Clare Foley). While cleaning the attic, he accidentally found a home videotape that recorded the happy and happy life moments of the previous owner of the house and the tragic scenes of them being hanged on the tree. In the days that followed, he watched the videotape over and over again, looking for clues of the criminals and tracking down clues in every corner of the house.
