Introduction

In the early 1990s, Cuban pilot Rene González (Edgar Ramírez) defected to the United States and began a new life of freedom, leaving his wife (Penelope Cruz) and young daughter behind in his communist homeland. But Rene was more than just a simple upstart American striver. He joined the South Florida "Wasp Network," a group of Cuban exiles led by covert agent Manuel Veramontes (aka Gerardo Hernández, played by Gael García Bernal). He became part of a pro-Castro spy ring tasked with monitoring and infiltrating Cuban-American terrorist organizations intent on attacking the socialist republic. Based on the true story of the "Cuban Five" (intelligence officers, including González, who were arrested in Florida in September 1998 and subsequently convicted of espionage and other illegal activities), "Wasp Network" is a gripping and unique political thriller with multiple implications, bringing together a group of Cuban nationals and Cuban-American exiles who are caught up in a complex and subtle struggle of ideology and loyalty and betrayal. Adapted from Fernand Moraes' book "The Last Soldiers of the Cold War", the film is adapted from the book "The Last Soldiers of the Cold War" by Fernand Moraes. Writer-director Olivier Assayas ("Carlos", "Personal Shopper") leads a strong cast (including Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramírez, Gael García Bernal, Ana de Armas, Leonardo Sbaraglia and Wagner Moura) to unfold an explosive and urgent spy game in the "hall of mirrors" that straddles the two neighboring countries, where the decades-long confrontation between the two countries has profound consequences for the present.
