In 1914, in a small town in Devonshire, the boy Albert (Jeremy Irvine) witnessed the birth of Joey, a young colt. At the fair, it was frequently bid, and was eventually bought by Albert's father Ted (Peter Mullan) for a sky-high price of 30 guineas. He was lame and offended the landlord because of this. Albert played with Joey and shared with his friends. However, the good times did not last long. The landlord came to visit and said that if Joey could not plow the land, he would take it away immediately, so Ted gambled all his belongings. So, under coercion, Albert put on the saddle for Joey, forced it to plow the land, and even used a whip, but he could not make it succumb. In order to pay off his debts, Ted personally went to plow the land. His hard work paid off and he got a harvest, but a heavy rain ruined everything. When the German army attacked, his father was forced to sell the horse to the cavalry for 30 guineas. Although Albert was reluctant to let go, he could only bid farewell to Joey in tears as he set off on the battlefield with an uncertain future. During the war, Joey's owners kept changing, from a British captain, a French farmer and his granddaughter, to a German cavalryman, but what he was really waiting for was Albert. Can they meet again...
