This film is adapted from James Ellroy's novel, depicting the police corruption and crime-ridden Los Angeles in the 1950s. Jack Vinson (Kevin Spacey) is a celebrity in the police force, often appearing on television media, colluding with the gossip reporter of "Hush Hush" to make extra money by making and exposing celebrity scandals. Ed Asley (Guy Pearce) inherited his father's career and joined the police department. He is ambitious and rigorous. He was promoted because of betraying his colleagues and was ostracized by everyone; Bud White (Russell Crowe) is ruthless, but impulsive and easily exploited. A suspected robbery in a restaurant connects these three people. Ed Asley found three black suspects and sentenced them to death. He was also rewarded by his superiors for this. However, he found that the case was not that simple during further investigation. He persuaded Jack Vincent to continue the investigation with him. Bud White had always been suspicious of the restaurant murder case. The clues he found also showed that the case was not as simple as he imagined.
