Description:In February 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima, known as the "meat grinder of the Pacific," ended. On the fifth day of the battle, five U.S. Navy soldiers, a military doctor, and a military reporter "created" a heroic photo, a photo that symbolized the country's victory: they planted the American flag on the commanding heights of Iwo Jima. When the photo made headlines in major American newspapers, three of the six heroes at the time had died heroically before they even knew they had become heroes.
