Edith (Mia Wasikowska) is an amateur horror novelist. One day, she met the handsome British inventor Thomas (Tom Hiddleston), whose courtesy and gentleness quickly attracted Edith's attention, and the two developed rapidly. However, Edith's father Carter (Jim Beaver) was full of hostility towards Thomas and firmly opposed his daughter's relationship with him. At this juncture, Carter died unexpectedly. Edith resolutely decided to leave his hometown and follow Thomas to the snowy Cumbria, where there stands a luxurious and desolate villa, which people call "Scarlet Manor". Edith and Thomas were greeted by Thomas' sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain). Lucille's weird and rude attitude made Edith feel very uncomfortable.
