In 1905, the imperial examination was abolished. Wu Shize was filled with loss and burned all his books, pens and papers. Cao Yunchan, who met by chance, rescued Wu Shize who was seriously ill and bedridden. Wu Shize took on all the losses of Hu's ink shop in times of crisis and proposed to Cao Yunchan, who was rejected by the Hu family. The two got married. The Wuchang Uprising changed the situation of the Cao and Wu families. The Beiyang warlords fought for years, and the production of Xuancheng paper industry gradually declined. With the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the fate of Cao, Wu, Hu, Wang, and Zhuge, several important families in Xuancheng, was closely linked. Wu Shunren, the eldest son of the Wu family, and Wang Bin, the eldest son of the Wang family, took two different paths. Shunren joined the underground party, and Wang Bin joined the Kuomintang. The two eventually became enemies and pointed guns at each other. Hu Yishu degenerated into a running dog of the Japanese puppets and framed his friends. On the eve of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Cao Yunhe died together with the Japanese colonel to protect Wu Shize, demonstrating the national integrity. During the War of Liberation, Shunren joined the People's Liberation Army and fought in battles across the country, making outstanding contributions.
