During the Gulf War, a tank unit officer, Sharin (Denzel Washington), misjudged and ordered the destruction of his own tanks, causing the accidental death of his friend Baldwin. Although the military court ruled that he was not responsible, he was still tormented by his conscience day and night. He had been trying to find Baldwin's parents to explain the matter, but he never had the courage. In order to award Sharin a medal, his superiors sent him to investigate an incident in which a mechanic bravely rescued a soldier and died during the war. During the investigation, Sharin discovered that the person who bravely rescued the soldier and died heroically was actually a woman, Karen (Meg Ryan)! However, the testimonies of several soldiers at the scene were self-contradictory and full of loopholes. After Sharin questioned one of the soldiers, Murphy, Murphy actually committed suicide.
