The film is based on Jin Yong's martial arts masterpiece The Legend of the Condor Heroes, but the main plot has become Ouyang Feng (played by Leslie Cheung), who is not well-received in the original work. Ouyang Feng left his hometown Baituo Mountain because his former lover (played by Maggie Cheung) married his brother out of spite, and came to the desert to open a wine house specializing in killers. In his self-exile in the desert, he reunited with his good friend Huang Yaoshi (played by Tony Leung), met the schizophrenic Murong Yan (played by Brigitte Lin), the sunset warrior (played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai) who deeply missed his wife Taohua (played by Carina Lau) but didn't want to see her, the stubborn revengeful orphan (played by Charlie Young), and Hong Qi (played by Jacky Cheung) who just came to the world without shoes. Everything was released, so he burned down the tavern and left the desert... The restored version and the 1994 version are slightly different in picture, length, soundtrack, title, dialogue, and shot.
