Introduction
The story is set in Paris during World War II, when Paris was occupied by Nazi Germany. Mr. Hoffman had to let his family go first and entrusted his jewelry store to his subordinate, Mercier, because of his Jewish identity. However, man proposes, God disposes. Not long after Mercier and his wife Blanche took over the jewelry store, Mr. Hoffman appeared in the jewelry store again. Thus, the fate of the three people became entangled.
