Introduction

Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) grew up in an orphanage in St. Clouds, where the director of the orphanage, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), took great care of him. Homer grew up healthily and happily with other orphans. He also studied with Dr. Larch and mastered superb medical skills, especially gynecological surgery. One day, Lieutenant Wally Worthington (Paul Rudd) brought his fiancée Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron) to the orphanage for an abortion. After the operation, Homer asked Wally if he could take him to the outside world to see, and Wally readily agreed. So Homer followed Wally out of the orphanage, saw the sea for the first time in his life, and found a job at Wally's apple farm. Soon after, Wally went to Burma to participate in the war. Homer and Candy grew in love as they got along day after day. On the other hand, Homer received a letter from the orphanage, Dr. Larch wanted him to go back to be his assistant, but Homer refused, he wanted to stay in the outside world. At this time, Wally received bad news from the front line, Wally was injured and paralyzed in the lower body and was about to go home. How should Homer deal with these problems? This film was adapted from John Irving's novel of the same name and received seven Oscar nominations, winning the Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay awards.
