The story takes place in Paris in 1895. Pierre (Niels Schneider) is a bohemian poet and a notorious playboy. Henri (Benjamin Lavernhe) is Pierre's friend. They study poetry together under the mentor Hederia (Amira Casar). Hederia has a very cute daughter Maria (Noémie Merlant). Pierre and Henri fall madly in love with this woman. Although Maria loves Pierre deeply in her heart, Maria eventually marries Henry due to economic pressure. Heartbroken Pierre decides to leave his sad place and go to Algeria, where he meets a woman named Zoha (Camélia Jordana). Although Zoha is beautiful and gentle, Pierre can never forget Maria.
