"The Grand Mansion Gate" was written and directed by Guo Baochang and won the CCTV ratings championship in 2001. The play tells the story of the ups and downs of the Bai family, a medical family, during the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, the warlords' melee, and the liberation period. It faithfully reflects the gradual development of the Tongrentang family as the country and the nation develop. The story spans the Guangxu period, the invasion of Beijing by the Eight-Power Allied Forces in 1900, the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, the September 18th Incident in 1931, and the July 7th Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937. Officialdom grievances, love and hate in the love field, and business wins and losses. It composes a "mansion gate" history, showing a magnificent and turbulent social life picture scroll, parents, children, wives, concubines, prostitutes, loved ones and friends; "mansion gate" people compose a song of fate of the world's vicissitudes, joys and sorrows.
