Bounty hunter Jack Walsh (Robert DeNiro) decides to go to New York to hunt down Jonathan Maddux (Charles Grodin), the accountant of Chicago gangster Jimmy Serrano (Dennis Farina) for $100,000. Jonathan embezzled $15 million from Jimmy and donated most of the money to charity. Jack originally planned to take Jonathan to Los Angeles by plane before midnight on Friday, but Jonathan suffered from a fear of flying, so the two had to take a train instead. At the same time, FBI agent Alonzo Mosley (Yaphet Kotto), Jimmy's gangster subordinates and Jimmy's rival, bounty hunter Marvin (John Ashton) are all tracking the two.
