This drama tells the story of a courtyard house in Beijing from the 1960s to the 1990s. He Yuzhu is a chef in the steel plant canteen. He is kind and righteous but outspoken, known as "Shazhu". Qin Huairu, a steel plant worker, lives in the same courtyard. She is filial and capable. She has one son and two daughters, but her husband died of a work-related injury and her life is difficult. Xu Damao, a projectionist at the steel plant, lives in the courtyard. He is selfish and is an enemy of Shazhu. There are also three respected old workers living in the courtyard, known as the "three uncles". Once a neighborhood dispute occurs in the courtyard, the three uncles will coordinate and resolve it. Shazhu seems to be out of tune, but he is kind-hearted. He not only provides a lot of living assistance to Qin Huairu's family, but also provides care and support for the elderly and deaf grandmother. Shazhu gradually matures in his interactions with his neighbors and has the responsibility and commitment of a man. Under the spring breeze of reform and opening up, Shazhu opened a restaurant and converted the courtyard house into a nursing home, living happily and harmoniously with all the "neighbors and family members".
