In order to consolidate their marriage, Teddy (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and Tammylin (Jessica Barth) had the idea of having a child. After trying various methods to no avail, they decided to adopt. However, Teddy discovered that the government did not regard him as a real "person" but just a "property". Therefore, he was not only unable to adopt a child, but also lost all his civil rights as a "person" - his credit card was scrapped, his job was ruined, and even his marriage to Tammylin became a dead letter. After discussing with his friend John (Mark Wahlberg), the angry Teddy decided to sue. They found a novice lawyer Samantha (Amanda Seyfried) and the three of them fought for "bear rights".
