In the second half of the 16th century, Seville was a great city in the Western world, the gateway from Europe to the Americas. The city's wealth was based on international trade and gold and silver wealth, but also on the populations of the country and abroad who lived together: Christians, Jews who converted to Christianity, baptized Moors, slaves, freed slaves, vagabonds, thieves, prostitutes, nobles, and commoners. At the same time, inequality, famine, and epidemics constituted the dark side of the city. During an outbreak of the Black Death, several prominent members of Sevillian society were killed. Mateo, a criminal tried by the Inquisition, must solve this series of murders in order to obtain a pardon from the Inquisition and save his life. This is a desperate investigation in an extremely complex and contradictory environment. There, public repression and private enjoyment coexist; mysticism and chaos are everywhere; monasteries are lax in discipline, but brothels are strictly regulated; prisons have become hiding places, hospitals have become burial places; betrayal and loyalty are intertwined.
