In the 1930s, Foshan was the capital of Chinese martial arts. On this day, Jin Shanzhao (played by Louis Fan), a martial arts master from the north, led a group of people to Foshan to challenge the masters of various martial arts halls. After all the masters of various martial arts halls were defeated by him, he found Ip Man (played by Donnie Yen), who had learned martial arts but kept a low profile and did not set up a hall to teach apprentices. At the request of patrolman Li Zhao (played by Lam Ka-tung), his good friend Wu Chi Lin (played by Xing Yu) and other neighbors, and the encouragement of his wife Zhang Yongcheng (played by Xiong Dailin), Ip Man used Wing Chun to defeat Jin Shanzhao with softness and hardness, and established his status as a master in Foshan. Li Zhao even regarded him as a master in private. Previously, Ip Man's best friend Zhou Qingquan (played by Simon Yam) wanted to pull him to open a textile factory, but he was afraid of being separated from his beloved wife and son, so he only supported Zhou financially. A few years later, the Japanese invaders occupied Foshan, and Ip Man, like the surviving neighbors, was forced to move to an abandoned house with his wife and children. In order to survive, Ip Man mixed in the crowd to compete for the opportunity to work as a laborer in the coal mine, while Li Zhao became a translator for the Japanese army. Japanese general Miura (played by Hiroyuki Ikeuchi) is a martial arts fanatic. He rewarded Li Zhao with a bag of white rice and sent him to search for Chinese people who can fight. In the fighting field, he competed with the Japanese army. Many former martial arts hall owners and martial arts fanatic Lin died tragically. This angered Ip Man and he walked into the fighting field.
