In Brooklyn, New York in 1988, Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix) runs a large club for Russian businessman Baskhayev. His girlfriend Amanda (Eva Mendes) is deeply in love with him. His career and love life are going well, but Bobby's family makes him feel resistant. His father, the New York police chief, and his brother Joseph (Mark Wahlberg), who has recently been promoted to the captain of the drug enforcement team, are in a professional environment that makes Bobby bored and unbearable.
