An 11-year-old boy from a poor rural family in northern China was selected to study ballet at the Beijing Dance Academy by an extremely accidental opportunity. At the age of 11, he was selected by chance to study ballet at the Beijing Dance Academy. In 1979, he went to the United States as one of the first batch of government-sponsored art students. Later, he chose to live in the United States and finally became a major dancer of the Australian Ballet. Li Cunxin, who was born in a rural area in Qingdao in 1961, was spotted by Jiang Qing at the age of eleven and was selected to study at the Beijing Dance Academy, and then was sent to the Houston Ballet in the United States. Li Cunxin found his first true love in the United States, which prompted him to make a surprising decision on the eve of his return to China in 1981, defecting for art and love. Carrying the stigma of defection, Li Cunxin started a brilliant ballet life. During his time at the Houston Ballet, Li Cunxin won two silver medals and one bronze medal at the World Ballet Competition and was named one of the world's top ten ballet dancers by the New York Times. Later, he became a principal dancer at the Australian Ballet. Before his stage career was about to end, Li Cunxin obtained a stock broker qualification through distance learning and successfully transformed himself. In 2003, Li Cunxin's autobiography was published in Australia, which immediately caused a sensation in the Western world and won the Nelson Book Award in October 2004.
