During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, a plague broke out in the capital, causing many casualties among the military and civilians. The emperor appointed Lieutenant Hong to go to Longhu Mountain in Xinzhou, Jiangxi Province, and invite Zhang Tianshi to exorcise evil spirits. Lieutenant Hong could not find Tianshi, but because of his stubbornness, he led away the 108 demons suppressed in Shangqing Palace. Decades later, it was the time when Emperor Zhezong was in power. Gao Qiu (Wei Zongwan), a poor man, won the favor of Prince Duan with his unique skills and tricks, and then rose to prominence.
