During the Southern Song Dynasty, the emperor and his ministers were incompetent, the government was declining, and the Jin Dynasty was eyeing them covetously. The Mongolian eagle Genghis Khan, on the surface, allied with the Song Dynasty to attack the Jin Dynasty, but secretly harbored the ambition to unify the country.
