Zhang Juzheng was so busy for the country that he didn't even bother to go home for the funeral when his old father died. He also exhausted his last bit of energy on June 20th, the tenth year of Wanli. After his death, Emperor Shenzong stopped the court. Because he offended some staff members with different opinions in the reform of the court system during his lifetime, and because of some mistakes in the use of people, some people began to slander and attack the current dynasty after his death. And Shenzong was also afraid that Zhang Juzheng would be too powerful and threaten his imperial power during his lifetime, so he ordered the confiscation of all Zhang Juzheng's property.
