The gangster killer "Ghost Dog" (Forest Whitaker) who lives in New Jersey is African American, but he is immersed in the spiritual world of Japanese Bushido, and "loyalty" is his highest creed in life. He lives in seclusion, is serious, and communicates with his boss by pigeon. Ghost Dog regards the boss Louis (John Tormey) as his biological father. After receiving the order, he will never show mercy. He will cut down the knife with his hands, and blood will splash everywhere. Although he is lonely, he also has friends with whom he can confide. In his spare time, he chats with the African American who buys ice cream and speaks French in the park. They talk about different things, but it is also interesting; or he exchanges his experience of reading "Rashomon" with the little girl who loves reading. Ghost Dog lives in his own world, but the surroundings have changed dramatically. Finally one day, he was abandoned by Louis and became a victim of gang oppression...
