Based on Nella Larson’s acclaimed 1929 novel of the same name, White Pass centers on two black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Claire Kendry (Academy Award-nominated Ruth Negga), who could pass for white but choose to live in two worlds divided by skin color during the height of New York’s Harlem Renaissance in the late 1920s. When the childhood friends meet again one summer afternoon, Irene reluctantly lets Claire in, leading Claire to ingratiate herself with Irene’s husband (André Holland) and family, and later into her wide-ranging social circle. As their lives become more intertwined, Irene finds her once stable life beginning to turn upside down with Claire’s presence. White Pass is a riveting film that examines the obsessions and repressions of human nature. What lies can people tell themselves and others in order to protect their carefully constructed realities?
