The story takes place in the Midwest of the United States in the 1950s. It expresses the creator's view on life by telling a typical American family story. The protagonist is an 11-year-old boy named Jack (Hunter McCracken), one of three brothers in the family. His father (Brad Pitt) is harsh and rude, and his mother (Jessica Chastain) is gentle but inactive. The death of his brother has changed his family. As an adult, Jack (Sean Penn) has a bad life. When he thinks about his life trajectory, he faces his memories again and begins to look at his parents, family, and childhood from a different perspective. Finally, he forgives his father and has a deeper understanding of life, life, and faith. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Photography.
