In 1949, the Kuomintang regime on the mainland collapsed, and its remnants retreated to Taiwan. In order to achieve national liberation, the Communist Party's Third Field Army continued to advance southward. The Red Sixth Regiment of the Independent Division where Wang Benli (played by You Yong) was located was the main force of this operation. However, due to the lack of maritime combat experience and a regular navy, more than 9,000 officers and soldiers of the Red Sixth Regiment were buried in the sea. Wang Benli, who survived by chance, changed his name to Wang Shankui after his friend in order not to forget this painful history.
