The film is set in the slums of Nagaya in the late Edo period, and depicts the love between two young night soil collectors and the eldest daughter of a down-and-out samurai family. In black and white, with academic painting format and chapter-by-chapter narrative, in this noisy era, the director returns to the classics with a radical attitude, using his best comedy form to write about the lives of the lower-class people and constantly explore the brilliance of human nature. Kuroki Hana, who won the Best Actress Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Best Supporting Actress Award from the Japan Academy of Film three times, perfectly interprets the heroine Akiku who lost her voice with her silent acting skills, and once again contributes an outstanding performance.
